Jeremy Bentham, the philosopher who reformed the British legal system and created the ethical doctrine of utilitarianism, decided to have his body embalmed and displayed, in order to inspire future generations. The idea was consistent with his thinking. He wanted to continue to be useful for the thinkers of coming times, thus providing society with the greatest possible utility. At special anniversary meetings of the board of University College of London, the mummified Bentham is wheeled out and sits in the room in a glass cabinet. In the minutes of the meeting, Jeremy Bentham is listed under "present, but not voting".
