Fortunately, there's sensible people talking, too.
The world has gone mad. Showing personal courage (which McCain has done, indisputably) is a good thing, but it's manifestly not a direct qualification to being president. It can be a tool for gauging character, but then again, it might not - Lincoln and Roosevelt, for instance, didn't serve in the military. "Swiftboating"? C'mon.

You`re of course absolutely right. Being shot down, does not qualify anyone to anything. Indeed, personal courage are not eqvivalent to sound judgement (in fear of fullfiling Goodwins law, let me remind you, that Adolf H, showed personal courage on the battlefield, and the rest as they say, are history)
But it does say something about a mans character. Add to his documented political courage, well illustrated by the issues he has choosen to front. By doing so he has counterd what has been widely considerd to be conservative orthodoxy. In example immigration, religous right, ban on torture, global warming, campaign contribution. Martins probably familiar with all these positions.
What ultimately makes me support McCains candidacy is not that he has been shot down, its rather his political convictions.
Yeah, remember back when McCain still had political convictions? Those were good times. Too bad he's campaigning for the crazy vote now. Jon Stewart saw it coming two years ago. "John, you're running to the base. Don't do it!"
